Biotec Services International

Biotec was established in 1997 in initial response to the growing demand for the transportation of biological and pharmaceutical products. With the advent of the Clinical Trials Directive in 2004, the Company rapidly expanded its clinical trials management service for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.

Our main challenges when starting the business

The major challenges during the first three years were identifying potential clients, generating and importantly retaining business and developing brand recognition both in the UK and overseas.

Success Factor

Rapid company growth is attributed to the establishment of a dedicated UK based Business Development team in early 2007. Currently all sales are handled via the company’s UK office although the longer term strategy (3-5 years) is to appoint a US based Business Development Manager. Biotec has also actively targeted the US and Israeli markets, and have been largely assisted by the Welsh Assembly Government through trade missions and in-market consultants that have allowed Biotec to increase brand recognition in these territories, generate new enquires and business and to also meet current clients and generate more business from the existing customer base. Finally, rhe relocation to a new purpose built facility in May 2008 has allowed the Business Development team to actively market the company and seek new business due to increased capacity in terms of labelling and packaging rooms, pharmaceutical storage and new primary packaging facilities.

The Future

The company aims to grow the sales pipeline to take the business to £7M whilst retaining profit levels, maximise people and process efficiencies, using lean methods and fully define and brand Biotec’s current services and enhance key account management. It will also broaden its service offering by investing in further small scale manufacturing, capsule filling and over encapsulation services, sub-contracting of services, strategic partnerships with other clinical service providers and expansion into new markets such as the Far East, India and Australia.
